The Power of Scent

  • Did you know there is such a thing as sand fleas?
  • Did you know when you live in Florida your dog can get fleas… in January?!?!

Well I do! I learned the hard way by moving to Florida (grumble, grumble grumble).

After living in Las Vegas I had forgotten what is was like dealing with these pesky little buggers. So here I was,  with a dog full of fleas, thinking “I can’t even use chemicals as cleaners in my house because she gets hives. How am I going to get rid of fleas?!?”

So, I did what every American would do…I googled it. 😉

  • Did you know Lavender essential oil is a natural flea and tick repellent?!

I read that a few drops on her collar is all I would need. Being a massage therapist I always have lavender on hand, so I whipped it out. My dog, Luna, has a chain collar with a cord running through the links, so I placed a few drops of lavender on her collar. Well the lavender worked!

Only thing is, I forgot to take into account the fact that a dogs sense of smell is far superior to a humans. Luna disappeared from the kitchen and not long after that I found her face down in a couch pillow. She was fast asleep! Lying on the couch like the drunk girl at a party. In that moment I was acutely reminded of the power of scent. Whoops!

  • Did you know that scent is one of the most powerful senses in our human body?

When the brain is developing, the sense of smell comes first. This results in the information from what we smell going straight to the part of our brain that is also connected to memory and emotion. The sense of smell is also free of interpretation from the thalamus gland which resides in the brain.  So when all other sensory input has to pass through an interpretation center, scent works right off instinct, sort of speak.

This brings us to the topic of aromatherapy.

When essential oils are added to a carrier oil, as it is in a massage treatment, studies have shown that not only is the oil absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin, it is also inhaled. Depending on the combinations of oils or their singular use they can have varying effects on the mind/body/spirit. It is important to ensure you are using a high quality oil. I prefer oils provided by Young Living.

There are so many oils that can be used for so many things, from massage enhancement to cleaning products. A relationship with an informed consultant is extremely useful!
